Otter Butter Line and Leader Dressing

It floats better!

Open Otter Butter tin with applicator cloth Small Otter Butter tin

Product Description

Otter Butter is a hand-crafted fly line and leader dressing made by us here in Groton, MA. Otter Butter applies easily with the included chamois applicator and a single application should last through a long day on the water. Originally developed for oiled silk fly lines, Otter Butter can be used on silk lines or modern synthetic lines, furled leaders, and tenkara lines. It does not contain any harmful solvents or ingredients and does not contain silicones. Otter Butter has a mild and pleasant beeswax fragrance. Otter Butter leaves a thin, hard coating on your line that glides through the guides. You will hear and feel the difference on silk and modern synthetic lines. It also does not pick up grit like other line dressings.

Otter Butter comes in a screw top tin can and is a full 1.5 oz. Also available in a convenient pocket size flip-top container for dressing your furled leaders, tenkara lines or stream-side touch-ups.

Try Otter Butter, we think you'll agree, “It floats better!”

Otter Butter Instructions and Tips. Instructions: Otter Butter is harder and less tacky than other dressings, allowing you to apply a thinner coat that lasts longer and prevents dirt build up. Never apply Otter Butter to a dirty or damp leader or line — trapped moisture invites mold. Apply a little Otter Butter to the chamois pad to make a 'wet' spot about the size of a dime, then apply by pinching the pad between your thumb and forefinger while pulling the line or leader through several times. Allow the butter to harden a few minutes before fishing. Tips: Keep the chamois clean by washing with warm water and soap to remove built-up dirt and butter residue. Wash dirty lines and leaders in warm soapy water. Store the chamois in the can.

Replacing an old dressing

To apply Otter Butter to a line previously dressed with Mucilin or another product:

  • Wipe the old dressing off with a clean cloth rag. You will probably see a lot of dirt on the rag from the grit the original dressing picked up.
  • Apply Otter Butter according to the instructions above.

Best line dressing available.

I've tried several line dressings including red Mucilin, which was previously the best I've tried. This is much better. Slicker, less sticky, and an all-around more durable coating.

best in class

First used otter butter a couple of years ago. Was surprised by how much better it was than the traditional product. Will continue to purchase and use in the future.

A good solid dressing

I like Otter butter and put it on my fly line, leaders, and even my flies. I like that it may need to be applied more often (it comes off cleanly) than other products yet provides better flotation than many other products. It is definitely waxy, and when applying to flies it stays for a longer period of time. I can recommend it for both trout and salmon gear.

Fantastic leader dressing.

Otterbutter is the best leader dressing I've used. I live in Montana and one of my favorite things is chasing rising fish on stillwaters here, what's commonly called “Gulper Fishing” in this region. Having a leader float high makes it much easier to pick up and recast to cruising fish, and also helps keep the leader out of the weeds that always seem present for this fishing. Otterbutter keeps the leader up higher and lasts longer than anything else I've used. I usually use it on furled leaders, but have also had it work great on normal mono leaders. It's also a great quick fix for a floating line with a waterlogged tip. It's become one of those little extras that I'm not confident fishing a hatch without. Great stuff.

best line dressing ever used

The firmness of Otter Butter is perfect, and the old school, screw lock tin is perfect. Unlike the competition's, it doesn't melt in my vest, run out and saturate the contents and be wasted. I bought a second tin just in case!

Good Stuff!

This stuff is great for my silk lines and furled leaders, they float longer and higher than when I was using Mucillin.

silk line floats longer & better

Fully endorse the use of this product on silk lines, much more effective than other floatants offered on the market today. Used it in canals down here in South Florida, can't wait til I get back to Oregon on some of the great trout waters I fly fish there.

works great

This butter works well and the applicator chamois does a great job of distributing the butter. Only con is the butter is dense and takes some elbow grease to get on the applicator chamois. But it's worth the work. Works great with furled leaders.

Best silk line floatant ever!

I used otter butter for the first time yesterday. I think it played a big role in the great day I had on the stream. I've used several different silk fly line pastes before, and I've even attempted several times to make my own, but Otter Butter is hands down the best I've ever used. The first great thing about it is that it's not sticky like every other paste I've used. This makes casting much, much easier. The second great thing about it is that my line floated all day long (I fished for about six hours). With other pastes, I would get about four hours before my line started to sink. I highly recommend Otter Butter to every silk fly line user!
